PCC John Campion and partners across West Mercia have set out a commitment to boost driver skills and knowledge through a new grant round.

With too many people being killed or seriously injured on our roads, communities, charities, education providers and local organisations are being invited to apply for the £300,000 funding to deliver projects that promote safer behaviours, tackle road safety concerns and deliver education.

The funding forms part of a road safety strategy developed by the PCC and West Mercia Police in partnership with organisations across Herefordshire, Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Worcestershire, united by a shared commitment to reducing the number of lives needlessly lost on the roads.

With data highlighting that young drivers, older motorists, motorcyclists and other vulnerable road users face higher risk, the partnership is keen to ensure these groups are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to be safe.

John Campion, Police and Crime Commissioner for West Mercia, said: “Every death or serious injury on our roads is one too many. Behind every collision is a person, a family and a community whose lives can be changed forever. I am sadly all too familiar with that through conversations I have had with grieving families.

“That is why I am committed to working with local partners, community groups and organisations to prevent these tragedies from happening in the first place. We share a commitment and a belief that the situation needs to change.

“While we continue to invest in policing and enforcement, creating safer roads is a shared responsibility so I am particularly keen to hear from organisations that can deliver innovative education and training initiatives, making a real difference in their communities.

“I look forward to working with partners, and the groups that are successful, to reduce the harm caused on our roads.”
