Significant boost in confidence in West Mercia Police in Shropshire

Confidence in West Mercia Police has risen in Shropshire, marking a positive step forward for local policing.

The latest results from Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion’s perception survey show a 7% increase in confidence between April – June 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.

Rising to 83%, residents described their experiences in different ways. One said: “The police are there when we need some help.” Another commented: “The police have an increased presence in the town.” A third added: “The police are keeping crime down in the area.”

Shropshire also recorded the highest levels in West Mercia for two key measures, feeling the police are in touch with local issues (75%) and satisfaction with policing levels (63%).

Other findings include:

·      19% of residents see an officer or PCSO at least weekly (up from 17% last year)

·      53% feel well informed about what West Mercia Police is doing in their area (up from 49%)

PCC John Campion said: “Confidence in policing is shaped by everyday experiences – whether people feel safe, whether they see officers in their community, and whether they believe the police will be there when they need them.

“It is encouraging to see confidence rising in Shropshire, and this is testament to the hard-working officers and staff focused on keeping communities safe.

“These results also highlight where continued focus is needed. I will continue to challenge and support the Chief Constable to ensure policing remains accessible, responsive and rooted in the needs of local people.”
