Local views shape latest picture of policing confidence across Worcestershire

Communities across Worcestershire have set out their views on local policing in PCC John Campion’s latest perceptions survey, highlighting confidence levels and everyday experiences with West Mercia Police.

Overall confidence remains strong, with 80% of respondents in North Worcestershire and 81% in South Worcestershire agreeing they have confidence in West Mercia Police. One resident said: “They are the people we call when something bad happens. We would be lost without the police.”

Perceptions of policing performance are different in the two counties. In North Worcestershire, 52% of respondents feel the force is doing an excellent or good job, down from 58% last year. In South Worcestershire, this figure has risen to 59%, up from 57%. Reflecting on their own experience, one resident said: “I was burgled quite a few years ago and the police were fantastic. I got really good feedback and aftercare.”

Visibility also differs between areas. Residents in North Worcestershire remain the least likely to see a police officer or PCSO at least weekly, at 18%, a stable figure. In contrast, visibility has improved in South Worcestershire, rising to 23% from 20% last year. One respondent noted: “I do see the police in the town and that makes me feel safe.” Another added: “We do not get as many problems now as the police have moved people on and I see more police patrolling.”

Other findings include:

  • 53% of respondents in North Worcestershire feel well informed about policing activity, a 6% increase. In South Worcestershire, 53% also feel well informed, up from 47% last year.
  • Concerns have reduced in North Worcestershire, with 26% believing crime and ASB are a problem locally, down from 29%. In South Worcestershire, confidence in local safety has remained steady.

PCC John Campion said: “Confidence in policing is shaped by everyday experiences – whether people feel safe, whether they see officers in their community, and whether they believe the police will be there when they need them.

“The feedback from residents across Worcestershire shows both the reassurance policing provides and the areas where people want to see continued improvement.

“These results highlight encouraging progress in communication and visibility, alongside clear indicators of where further focus is needed. I will continue to challenge and support the Chief Constable to ensure policing remains accessible, responsive and rooted in the needs of local people.”
