Public invited to shape focus on victims and witnesses
PCC John Campion is taking a stand for victims and witnesses by ensuring they are at the heart of the process and given the support they need.
As part of the PCC’s Victim and Witness Strategy, he has reaffirmed his commitment to always strive for more for those affected by crime. Whilst vast improvements have been made to the services and support available, the PCC recognises there is more to do.
Within this plan, the PCC has outlined that anyone affected by crime should receive support when they need it, regardless of whether they choose to report the crime to the police or not, and this support should be seamless, be responsive to victims’ needs and ultimately help them cope and recover from the harm suffered.
The plan also includes how the PCC will work with relevant organisations, not only to ensure that they comply with the rights set out within the Victims’ Code of Practice, but also that they are considering victims and witnesses. This includes the criminal justice system, where victims can sometimes be pulled along a process that fails to recognise their needs.
Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said: “Victims and witnesses of crimes are some of the most vulnerable people within our society, so it is imperative they are supported and given the help they need to cope and recover. However it goes beyond that and their specific needs should be met.
“I have long been fighting for victims, but this strategy goes further by putting their voice at the very heart of the process to deliver and review services and drive improvement. It also involves holding to account partners and organisations on the service delivered.
“Before this strategy is finalised, alongside the voices of those affected by crime, I want to hear from the public and organisations on what their thoughts are. I invite you to take part in the consultation and submit your views.”
