Investment in facilities for victims of serious sexual offences
Playing a vital role in supporting victims of serious sexual offences and bringing offenders to justice, a Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Telford & Wrekin is due to re-open later this month after funding from Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion.
Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) play a crucial role in a victim’s journey, providing a safe and confidential space to receive medical care, forensic examinations and practical support after an assault, regardless on whether the victim has reported the crime to the police or not.
To ensure examinations take place in the highest quality environment, The Glade in Wellington, Telford has undergone significant changes designed to minimise contamination risks and preserve forensic evidence.
The work shaped by those with lived experience was done through strong partnership between the PCC’s Estates team, NHS England, WMP Forensic Services and Mountain Healthcare.
This latest milestone follows the building upgrades to The Glade in Bransford, Worcestershire, completed in 2024, bringing the total investment by the PCC into the SARCs to over £700,000 in the last two years.
PCC John Campion said: “Victims of sexual violence deserve the very best care, support and dignity at every stage of their journey. By investing in modern, high quality facilities at The Glade, we are ensuring that forensic examinations take place in an environment that protects evidence, reduces trauma and puts victims’ needs first.
“This work reflects what victims and survivors have told us matters most, and it shows what can be achieved through strong partnership working. I am proud that my investment has ensured that wherever you live in the three counties – from our urban centres to our rural countryside – victims can access the very best support when they need it most.”
