Latest perceptions data shows increase in police visibility
More residents are seeing West Mercia Police out in their community according to the latest results from Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion’s quarterly perceptions survey.
From the period of July to September, a fifth of residents from across the three counties say they saw a police officer or PCSO at least weekly. A 4% rise when compared to the same period in 2024.
This follows investment from the PCC to deliver record numbers of police officers as well as the continuation of hotspot policing patrols – a disruption tactic that puts cops on the streets in the right place, at the right time.
More than half of residents are satisfied with the level of policing in their area (57%) and overall confidence in the force has remained steady at 80%. Far ahead of a national YouGov survey in 2024, which found 52% of adults in Great Britain had no/not very much confidence in the police.
There’s been a small 3% decrease in the number of residents who are confident they could access the police in an emergency (89%), compared to the same period last year. Opinion on non-emergency contact has remained stable at 65%.
Committed to improving the service the public receives, the PCC continues to monitor and scrutinise call centre performance through regular meetings with the Chief Constable.
Other key findings:
- 70% of residents agree the force understands their community issues. This is a 2% drop compared to the same quarter the previous year
- Despite recorded crime decreasing by 8% between December 2023 to 2024, seven out of 10 residents felt crime and ASB levels had remained the same – a sixth felt there was more
- 88% of residents felt they were safe in their local area over the last three months.
