Making Moves in Brookside

Teenagers in Brookside are safer, after taking part in the Making Moves initiative partly funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner and supported by Senior Police Community Support Officer Katy Balaam alongside PC Ash Doignie and PSCO Demmi Ramsden from Brookside Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Over the last 14 weeks the teenage girls learnt some key life skills with inputs on knife crime, cyber crime, and self defence. They had inputs on domestic abuse from West Mercia Women’s Aid, drugs and alcohol from Recharge Telford and hate crime from I Am Me! Whilst Shropshire Fire and Rescue delivered sessions on fire and water safety. They were able to develop a creative flair by designing a ‘Making Moves’ logo which was presented to them on water bottles and hoodies, and showed off their best moves in Tik Tok dance classes.

Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion who contributed £2500 towards the scheme said “Sessions like this equip young people with key skills enabling them to live happier, and safer lives. The girls involved should be really proud of their achievements and the bridges and relationships they have built. I am proud to support schemes like this and many others which contribute to making our communities safer.”

Senior Police Community Support Officer Katy Balaam, said: “The girls involved in the workshop have worked really hard throughout this initiative.

“This new initiative has played a big part in breaking down barriers between the group, ourselves and partners, and overall has been a very positive experience for all involved.

“Alongside enjoying the dance they have also received some very impactive and informative inputs from organisations across the community.”
