PCC’s commitment to equality in policing

PCC John Campion further strengthens his commitment to see that inequality within society isn’t reflected in policing.

The Commissioner, who is also the Association of Police and Crime Commissioner’s national deputy lead on Equality, Diversity, and Human Rights, has responded after a report was released today by HMICFRS around the disproportionate use of police powers, specifically on stop and search:

“This timely report covers an important subject, and one we have to get right if we are to build trust within communities. Whilst I recognise that progress has been made, there still remains an inequality within society which I am striving to ensure isn’t reflected within policing.

“Confidence in policing is vital, as people should be able to look to their police force for trust and help when they need it. Dis-proportionality can naturally have an adverse impact on communities, and that isn’t something I want to see across West Mercia. I want to make sure that the communities’ attitudes of inclusion and embracing diverse cultures are reflected in the force.

“This isn’t a project or initiative that will see a quick fix to a problem, this is an ongoing societal change, and it also isn’t just about West Mercia. However, I am committed to seeing that the increase of confidence our communities have had in the force continues, and I will hold the Chief to account to ensure this happens.”
