Volunteer Project Breaks Down Barriers

Green fingered volunteers have been brightening up Monkmoor Police Station, as part of a project funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner.

The project, which the PCC invested in as part of his plans to make volunteering more inclusive within the police, involves eight sixth form students, with a range of learning difficulties, from Severndale Specialist Academy. It is aimed at providing the volunteers with new skills and helping them to break down barriers between them and the police.

Commissioner John Campion said “As commissioner I want volunteering to be accessible to all, and it’s pleasing to see how these kind of volunteer projects are connecting communities to policing and policing to communities. I am grateful to all of the volunteers for their valuable contribution, and it is pleasing to see them growing in skills and confidence through this project.”

Liz Harrison, a Teacher at Severndale Specialist Academy said “The students comment about how proud they are of themselves and how they feel that they are making the gardens a lovely place for the police to look at.

This project has allowed the students to feel valued, they are happy to give up their time to help make the grounds look beautiful.”

Superintendent for Shropshire, Mo Lansdale said: "We're very grateful to the pupils at Severndale Specialist Academy for the brilliant work they've carried out, they've come up with some really great ideas for the gardens and have excelled in the work that has been carried out so far.

"Our volunteers play such a valuable role in policing and supporting what we do and we can't thank them enough."
