PCC’s commitment to reducing crime

As part of Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion’s commitment to building a safer West Mercia, he wants to work with local councillors to help prevent burglary.

The ‘We Don’t Buy Crime – Leading from the Front’ project, which is funded by the Commissioner, seeks to reduce acquisitive crime throughout West Mercia. One way this is done is through the use of crime deterrent ‘Smartwater’. This water-based solution is unique to each bottle and is used to mark property to enable the police to identify the owner of the property, and potentially the offender.

The Commissioner has offered to contribute 25% of the cost for councillors looking to supply Smartwater in their area, as well as free signage which will let offenders know that if they commit crime in this area then are likely to get caught and not profit from their crime.

John Campion said: “Across West Mercia we have already seen great successes with Smartwater proving to work, and I would like to see this continue across the rest of our communities. Many people that have used Smartwater, and are now living in a ‘We Don’t Buy Crime’ town, are feeling more reassured and have commented on how there is now a more enhanced community spirit.

“This offer will not only contribute to reducing crime but it will provide a further opportunity for us all to work together and make our communities feel safer.”

All district, town and parish councils across West Mercia can apply for the funding via the Commissioner’s website. Any residents who would like Smartwater in their area are also being encouraged to notify their local councillor.
