Commissioner welcomes decrease in police complaints

John Campion has welcomed the news that fewer complaints are being made to West Mercia Police.

The figures from the Independent Police Complaints Commission show a 13% decrease in the number of allegations over the last year. When compared to other forces, West Mercia Police receive some of the lowest numbers of allegations. The report also showed a 7% decrease in appeals made by dissatisfied complainants.

Whilst the report highlighted a number of positives, concerns were raised the amount of time it takes West Mercia Police to record and finalise complaints. The Commissioner will continue to hold the force to account to ensure that improvements are made.

Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said “The decrease in complaints is testament to our hard working officers and staff. It is important that when the public speak to us we react, and we put it right when it needs to be put right.

Whilst complaints are few, our communities deserve to know that their concerns will be dealt with quickly. The delays are disappointing but we do have a strong foundation to build on. I will hold the Chief Constable to account to ensure that improvements can be made.

I would welcome anything which simplifies this process and gives the public confidence in West Mercia Police with reassurance that their complaint will be dealt with thoroughly.”
